Hi @KMcCue can I check size please? This looks smaller than 50mm (5cm)- looks like a nymph. But if its really over 5cm maybe its a Heidi sp. adult but the antennae dont look long enough. Its blurry so possible but unlikely from inspection

The size must be incorrect. It is unlikely to be an early instar wingless nymph of Acrida at this time of year or is a late instar nymph of Keyacris. Both would be about 20mm in length. There is suitable habitat in this area for Keyacris although a search at nearby Glendale last year failed to find any Keyacris

Its the year of the keyacris! They are making their comeback!

Yes it was small, longer than some of the other grasshoppers I see there. Perhaps 5cm is stretching it, 3cm maybe, but I saw it whilst weeding our primary role, not whilst looking for grasshoppers and the length is a memory recall, much later. Not very scientific I'm sorry. I should take a ruler and notebook perhaps but I have water, a camera/phone, plastic bag, a mattock, secateurs, and wear thick gloves (Saffron Thistle is hard on hands) quite enough to hang onto.

@KMcCue I find size very difficult to ascertain myself! I just happen to know keyacris size.

There is a dried Kangaroo dropping under it so yes, more like 20 mm. Thanks Roger and Clarehoneydove
