I think the white things are wasp eggs, and the lower caterpillar has been parasitised by the wasps?

These look like wasp pupal cocoons. Ross P. Field notes that both larvae and pupae of this species suffer heavy parasitism from wasp and fly parasitoids (Butterflies Identification and life history).
