It is rumoured that living feral pigs have occasionally been observed in Black Mt (less than one per decade) but in this location, it is also quite possible that the skull was from a pig killed elsewhere.

Don are you happy to confirm this record?

It looked quite weathered, I would say it’s been there quite a while. I did wonder how it got there, either there was a pig roaming there at one point or someone dumped a pigs head in the reserve.

Michael, If we found a walrus skull there it would obviously be due to artificial transport so I presume we would not record it. This is certainly a pigs skull. It seems likely that it was transported there by human action but it is also possible that a pig died there, so it is not easy to judge. My inclination is to not record it as a feral pig at that location. It sort of depends on the aims and philosophy of Nature Mapper. What do you think?

Also have to take into account the rangers move roadkill around when found on roads, in unwanted places etc, so could have easily been relocated to there if found nearby.

Don I think record it as a pig and the comments provide sufficient information on the vagary of location

I have no concerns if this sighting was removed. I can only imagine a pig being in that location dead or alive is due to some kind of human intervention. It doesn’t really reflect the true distribution of the species. On the other hand if someone captured it and released it there, then it was there.

I defer to the Mulvaney wisdom.
