I watched the ladybird take evasive action a couple times to avoid being taken by the dragonfly, but then its luck ran out.

Have never seen a Dragonfly hunting and then catch the prey and have only seen a Dragonfly with prey a few times. You were in the right place at the right time to see this, but the Ladybird wasn't. Sure is great to see the Dragonflies again.
