oh I got it wrong with the larvae we saw nearby; they are beetle larvae not sawflies - Barb did you take photos of the larvae? if not I hope to take some. There were a number of adult leaf beetles of the same species so it is likely the larvae we observed were of the same species.

No, unfortunately I did not photograph the larvae, so please take more photos of these leaf beetles. I could not find one which looked quite the same in the species listing.
