The heads are beginning to disintegrate and their original shape is not evident: plus leaves a bit ambiguous. Hence sticking to Typha sp, as suggested by natureguy is sensible.

Thanks, I hadn't realised there was more than 1 species. Will take more photos when the heads are fresher
