User's notes

Several of these, smaller and no white tip to tail. Some were not at all shy, and appeared a bit smaller so could have been a different species? I'm not sure what has been released here, but definitely inside the Sanctuary, so part of the release program. Delightful to see.

I assume these are Southern Brown Bandicoot, but cannot find them in the categories.

Hi Christine, There are Southern Brown Bandicoots inside the Sanctuary (and Long Nosed Bandicoots in various parts of the ACT) but this is a Long Nosed Potoroo which is a member of the Potoroidae family of the macropod Super-Family (kangaroos and relatives). It has a more substantial tail than a bandicoot, a much blunter head and shorter ears and looks quite a bit bigger

Oh. There were some that looked about half the size of the other two which had white tips on their tails, but I was possibly confused as it was a bit dim, I thought there were three distinct animals but only seemed to have photos of two, I possibly thought this was the smaller one as it did not have the white tail-tip, and was definitely smaller than the Potoroos in the other sighting. I will see if I have a very blurry photo of the really small ones. But is the white tail tip only on some of the Potoroos? Thanks for all your help.

Smaller ones with partly white tail = bandicoot. Maybe you have earnt another trip to Tidbinbilla carrying a mammal identification book, binoculare and camera :-)
