Not sure how to describe the numbers - if it is one plant or thousands. They are all over the branches and trunk of this pine tree

I believe this is actually a fern. If you look closely at the first image you can see the brown sori (clusters of spores) on the underside of the mature leaves. I agree they look like orchids and they fool me all the time.
