Varanus varius has wide stripes on the distal half of the tail where Varanus rosenbergi has narrow stripes all the way to the end of the tail, and Varanus varius has broad stripes all the way around its head where Varanus rosenbergi has narrow stripes that are restricted to the sides and underside of the head, not on top.
