These obviously vary a bit in colouring. Are the pale versus dark a difference in sex or age or aliveness or something else?

Yes, There are a yellow and white base colour forms. The black can be quite dark or light and everything in between. Moths of Victoria (supporting disc, Part 2) say the variation in colour is not sex related.

Thanks. I had classified them all as the crimson tiger moth but then got confused when I realised that there was so much colour variation. I still have them all in the same subdirectory as the same thing. The red (crimson) varies quite a bit as well.
