from the distance the plants appeared to be Stackhousia sp, only when close did it look like a grass

It doesn't appear to have the awns like Dichelachne. Looks more like sweet vernal grass but I am still not 100%.

I should have included a habitat photo, but do not have one. The majority of the plants were in grassy areas in open woodland, with the base grasses about 20cm high and the subject plant scattered through this and with a more or less erect flower stem about 35 cm high. Plant density not more than 1 per square metre.

Normally sweet vernal grass forms dense clumps. It produces a sickly sweet smell that you can often smell as you walk. Unfortunately it is quite a widespread species in the high country and is present throughout many of the alpine grassland areas.
