Significant sighting

MichaelMulvaney noted:

18 Jul 2022

New - early establishment site of a weed with very high spreading potential

User's notes

I’m guessing this is fireweed? If someone can confirm it I will pull it out asap. Only saw one plant but have not yet had a thorough search of the area.

Thanks Steve if you could pull it out and bag it - the seeds continue to develop even when pulled out - and put in general waste bin

Searched for a few hundred metres in either direction from the initial sighting and found two more to the south about 60 metres and within 50cm of the road. All three plants double bagged. I’ll come back and check the area again over the next few weeks.

Excellent job

Thanks Michael, it’s also worth noting that these were found 20-30 metres from a high fence that surrounds a pink-tailed worm lizard conservation area, with signs saying access is prohibited. So there is a reasonable chance there may be some in that area.

Thanks will send an alert to Queanbeyan City Council

I alerted Queanbeyan City Council to this finding and got this very prompt and heartening reply from Neville Plumb - Team Leader Biosecurity Weeds.

"Thank you for the report on Fireweed at Googong. We have been finding and controlling some plants in the area for a few years. In addition, we have had an educational program running in Googong with the local schools in the area and the community garden group.

We generally have a check every two-three weeks; I will send someone out and check again.

It has been difficult as we also find one of the native Senecios species (Senecio pinnatifolius) in Googong and across the Council area."
