I have collected beetle larvae at various stages that look both like these and with the darker backs, and raised them to adults. I've found that both of these have evolved as P. varicollis, but others have evolved as P. atomaria. Therefore my view is that unless the adults and / or eggs are seen that the species cannot be determined.
