Hi John, nice photos. This ant does look a bit like R. aspera (a medium sized black ant with reddish legs), but the shape of the tail, the surface texture on the body and head, the shape of the head and the spines at the back end of the body rule out R. aspera. Happy New Year! Cheers, Jon
