Bearded dragon catching some rays (not a threat display). I was surprised by how much it could flatten itself out for maximum solar power effect.

Yes, and it has taken on a darker hue to help with that warming effect. Many species of dragon can change from lighter to darker colours in response to things like substrate and air temperature. This occurs by changes in the distribution of pigments in special pigment cells.
