User's notes

Was buzzing around with the Apis mellifera but had a different flying pattern, fast and darted around a lot. Very difficult to capture on camera, had to wait. I was surprised to see a native bee in Canberra in August.

Trichocolletes orientalis has an unusual life-cycle (Austral Entomology (2020) 59, 593–601). Many bees remain as final stage larvae until it is time to pupate and emerge. T. orientalis become adults before winter and are ready to emerge as soon as flowers appear. So far, Trichocolletes orientalis is the only species about which there is information, so some other species may also have atypical life histories.
