Thanks Alice - very exciting find what is the species?

I have now tried to add the species name that I was given! My mistake in omitting it. My colleague only imaged the head and thorax, but the rest is not diagnostic. You can only ID these with any certainty if you make a slide preparation. It was certainly an interesting find.

What size is this insect? I'm guessing it is very small and these images were taken with a microscope?

Michael
They are tiny, body length about 1.4 mm. You will find similar-looking thrips on garden flowers. The images are taken with a compound microscope set up with a camera and a programme with which you can take multiple images and stack them to give a comprehensive image.

An amazing structure for such a tiny creature. How lucky we are to be able to see it.
