As the water level rose, the ants all gathered on a rock and then they were all washed off clinging together like this

Hi Alex, I can't identify the ant from the photos, but it is a nice observation. Quite a lot of ants do this "rafting" behaviour to deal with flooding. There's a nice video of this at the following link. Cheers, Jon https://watch.thewest.com.au/show/357820
