User's notes
The images show the base of the beetle's antennae located within the compound eye structures. Presumably the head shape of this beetle has evolved over time and the antennae have moved backwards across the head and into the eye structures. This appears to be confirmed by some insects where the compound eyes have almost been divided into two parts by the base of each antenna.
