Hi Sandra, clearly Myrmecia (which I'm sure you already knew) and most likely M. pilosula group (a Jack Jumper) but just doesn't look quite right, so I've left it at genus level for now. Did you notice it jumping about when you took the photos? Cheers, Jon

Hi Jon, the ant didn't jump at all. I noticed it while planting. It wasn't angry or particularly fussed by me being up close which is probably why it caught my eye. It looked a bit different to the other Myrmecia we have. Cheers, Sandra

Myrmecia aberrans species group.
This is an undocumented species or colouration variant.

@Illilanga if you still have access to this property it would be amazing if you could capture a few specimens and send them to ANIC.

There are a number of collections in the Australian National Insect Collection (ANIC) of Myrmecia maura (which is in the M. aberrans species group) around the Canberra region, all from a long time ago. The specimens in the collection are black or blackish like this sighting, so likely to be that species.

Thanks Jon! Thought it might be that species :)
