Of the two main mound building species of termite in the Canberra area, this mound looks typical of Nasutitermes exitosus. It is not the mound of the other species, Coptotermes lacteus. There is constant war between some ant species, including the common meat ants, and termites. It is not unusual to see a termite mound surrounded by a meat ant nest. Interestingly, this proximity can be maintained for at least a year.
