In the inset at the lower left you see part of the associated algal mat on the soil. A closer look (say with a 10X hand lens) would show this mat to be bubbly in texture. Some of those 'bubbles' are shown in the small inset to the right of the 90 and the rightmost inset shows a a microscopic view of one 'bubble' (in this case 50 micometres in diameter).' There you see numerous green algal cells and colourless fungal cells go around and into the algal cells. You can see some of those fungal cells as the 'halo' around the margin of the green mass. There are also fungal cells over all of that green area, but since they are colourless they don't show in this photo. Going off to the right is part of a fungal hypha and such filamentous hyphae run between the 'bubbles' and the whole mass of 'bubbles' and hyphae constitute the vegetative part of the lichen.
