User's notes

Not what you want to find in your wood heap. There are also 2 eggs in the photo from a sugar ant nest in the same piece of timber.

At my end, little detail is visible in this photo. Several possible species. (These are not from a mound.) Can you find some soldiers. Do they have a single tapering 'gluegun' snout (Nasutitermes species) or two jaws (other genera), and do the jaws have 'teeth' on the inner edge? Try to photograph the jaws. Sugar Ants take over some termite nests (like Meat Ants) so maybe they have been slowing the spread of the termites for you.

There was a mound, about 20cm high, full of very small termites, but in total fear it would become metres high with millions of denizens I demolished it. There were soldiers present then. These are from the extended mound that was built into the wood heap. At 9.5C the termites were almost motionless and made a feast for a pair of mudlarks.
