Was there a non-native tree, in particular a conifer, nearby?

No, there wasn't Heino. The photo was taken in our native garden that we created and that section of the garden consisted of only Eucalypts and Acacias and native/exotic grasses when we moved there in 2000.

Species of Suillus form symbiotic associations with introduced conifers. Certainly there are examples of fungi, introduced to foreign lands, adapting to new symbiotic partners but thus far, in Australia, Suillus seems to have been found only with introduced conifers. Unfortunately there are various native boletes which do have brownish caps & yellow pores and I can't hazard a guess as to the genus here.
