So not an orchid?

Nope. Its roots parasitise other plants and it is the colour it is because it has no chlorophyll (which it doesn’t need because it gets all its nutrients from the host plant).
It is not really related to orchids at all. Orchids are in the family Orchidaceae while this is lumped in with other plants that are root parasites in the family Orobanchaceae.
Some orchids happen to be root parasites, though most aren’t, so it is pretty confusing.

Thank you Betty/Don. Learning more about plant life in the ACT every day👍 Should I be removing it? It is in a garden bed, not near other plants but in some pretty dreadful mulch.

There is not much point in trying to remove it. Most of the plant is underground. However it only flowers in moist circumstances, so if you are worried about it I suppose you could give the bed less water. Though that would probably have an adverse effect on the plants that you want in that bed.

Thank you Betty. I’m trying to encourage other new plantings to thicken up and grow so have been watering more than usual. They’re new beds and plants are in a common area so I want them to survive after some neglect. I’ll monitor it. Again thank you.
