The stated position is a good approximation - a guess at where we were on the Mt Clear Fire Trail from our GPS track. But the photo didn't record the exact position. I nearly stood on it and called back my friend to come and see it.
Many thanks for this report Barrie R. Whether it was around the same time of that day, or not, I'm not sure but Canberragal photographed what appears to be the same goanna at the same rock with the bulldozer scratches on it. Because Rosenbergs records are protected in the database you will not be able to see her sighting.
Thanks Don. We were together, Terrylea Reynolds and I, and it was I who saw it and drew it to her attention. We had walked off track to Mt Clear and were on our way back along the Mt Clear FT, then Long Flat, and then FT back to the Mt Clear car park . Regards Barrie Ridgway
Hi Barrie, yes I guessed that. Thanks again to both of you. Records in that area are rare. There is only one other RG record for quite a few km in any direction. Probably reflecting that few people go there and few of those post to CNM. BTW your guessed location was only a couple of hundred metres from Terylea's.
Hi Don, Well, I am as "chuffed as a newt"to know that my estimated position was almost spot on . thanks so much for letting me know. As you say, not many people go up there - it is a long and fairly hard day. We went up from the Naas FT to Chalkers Chimney - pretty open and we might have spotted a RG through there had one crossed our path ( I think we did see a termite mound on the way up ) . From Chalkers we aimed to (and virtually did) come out on the Mt Clear FT on a grid bearing from Chalkers of about 100*. Whilst not especially scrubby through there it is pretty rough and ones chances of seeing a RG would be unlikely. I don't recall any termite mounds through there, but Terrylea may have noticed - she sees more than I do! Had it not been for the eagle making us pause we may not have seen the RG . As it was Terrylea had already gone past it. It was only because I had stopped and then was setting off again and looking down that I noticed it. But it is exciting that we have in a small way helped to gain more information on their distribution.
