Any chance of taking it into protective custody and rearing it to get an adult which we could identify?

I think the hairyness rules out about half of the 30 or so Australian Lepidoptera superfamilies, including the big ones
Gelechioidea, Geometroidea, Papillionoidea, and Pyraloidea,
but that still leaves about 5,000 possible species .

Not sure when i can get back there or if it would be still in the same spot. It was not moving at all so i thought it might be a safe day roost for this insect. If i can find it again what would i need to give it to eat?

You could offer it leaves off plants nearby, or failing that rose petals, or thin slices of apple, see
