WOWOWOWOW is this a migrant coming in from the outback? Awesome sighting!

Yes super exciting but keep in mind it could very well be an escapee as well. Kati, could you tell us a bit about its behaviour, whether it was approachable, or if you noticed any bands? Did it do much or just sit there on the play equipment? Just the one bird I assume.

Hi Kati. Thanks for your photo. I have downloaded the original photo, cropped it and added it back to be used on the Species page, see:-

Hi all! Thanks for your interest. I would say it’s behaviour was somewhat strange. It was sitting calmly eating some sort of berry/seed from a small twig it was holding. When children approached it it gave a loud squawk made ready to leave but when the children backed off it stayed where it was. No rings or tags I could see.

Has to be an escapee...?

Was it seen flying? It looks like the wings are clipped to me.

I assume so. Having said that the surrounding area is highly forested and supports other cockatoos (such as a large black cockatoo population) so perhaps it will survive well enough here?

I didn’t see it fly.

Hello, there is a Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo in Coombs that regularly free-flies around. I would say it’s most likely him- hopefully he isn’t lost. I have been caught off guard a few times, and then see that it eventually flew back to a person.

It must be the same one. I wonder if the owner takes it for trips to the park?!

I have seen it down at the oval here, and a playground too so maybe 😊

Wow this is awesome. So basically a tame local pet :)

After doing some thorough research I've been thinking of whether the sightings for the species (including mine) should perhaps be made Inconclusive since just like we don't allow pet dogs and pet cats on naturemap the same should be said for pet Cockatoos. Happy for thoughts.

The birds name is Roko, a free flying pet.

A stray animal is still a valid sighting, and could have significance depending on the circumstances.

I agree with Steve re this parrot, not so for dogs and cats.

Cats are devastating to native wildlife, if there are cats seen in our reserve I would appreciate the sightings.

@SteveBorkowskis @michaelb this bird is not a stray, it is a free flying bird that goes home each day. Here is a link to an ABC interview with the owner, if you have Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1790006061193728
