Hi Cath, even better photos! In the first photo you can see very clearly a male alate (winged ant). You can tell it's a male because it has a very small head. Male alates don't need to eat as they have no use after mating, so they don't have the jaws and muscles that you see on other ants heads. In contrast, the female alates you can see in the other photos have big normal looking heads as they have to eat, as well a dig a new nest after mating. Thanks, Jon
