Significant sighting

MichaelMulvaney noted:

3 Nov 2018

This is the first record of this plant naturalised in the ACT, it is a bad weed on the southern highlands and considered to be a sleeper weed elsewhere

Silke - this is a shrub to get rid of as a matter of priority are you or some-one in Ainslie weeders able to deal with it or do you want me to arrange Park staff to control?
   5 Nov 2018
Yes, we can deal with it. It's been there for a while but this is the first time I've seen it in flower and realised that it's something new. I'll get onto it.

The bush has been removed. I'll monitor the spot for possible re-sprouting.

Thanks Silke - much appreciated

I wonder whether this is B. floribunda; the foliage of B. vulgaris, recorded on Mt Ainslie at Berberis vulgaris (Barberry Bush) seems to have different foliage.

Looks like a good call waltraud @Tapirlord what do you think - note there are two forms of leaves on the one plant

I think this would also be a first for the ACT of this invasive species

Evergreen plant; leaves irregularly toothed, margins with few to several pairs of teeth; fruit more or less globose, red to black, style 1–2 mm long - Berberis floribunda

Deciduous plant; leaves regularly toothed with numerous fine teeth; fruit more or less oblong, red, stigma more or less sessile - Berberis vulgaris

The foliage on this plant isn't regularly toothed which isn't consistent with Berberis vulgaris and the features of the spines aren't consistent with any of the other species in the key. Reckon Waltraud's got a good shout with Berberis floribunda.

thanks Tapirlord and MichaelMulvaney
We have listed B. floribunda for Mt Majura; however, because the CNM mapping tool has gone I can't find the record to re-check.
There is B. vulgaris on Mt Ainslie shown on the last picture on Berberis vulgaris which is a record from Mt Ainslie https://canberra.naturemapr.org/sightings/4663854.
So all 3 species: B. aquifolium, B. floribunda (if this record is confirmed) and B. vulgaris occur on Mt Ainslie, and so far we have records for B. aquifolium and B. floribunda for Mt Majura, the latter to be re-checked.

While this is in the news, can one of you plant moderators please fix Berberis floribunda so that it displays one of the other photos from https://canberra.naturemapr.org/sightings/4485784, the one with fruit, instead of doubling up on the spines one?
   28 Sep 2025
abread111 I'm not sure what you mean Barb; Berberis floribunda (Nepal Barberry, Many-flowered Barberry) is confirmed B. floribunda.

Its OK Waltraud, someone has changed the species page of 4 photo already, but put in a not very useful photo of a non-descript bush instead of the one I suggested. Barb
