Apparently planted and multiplying; also been cut down by rangers and regrown; on the east side of the Murrumbidgee River, north of Pine Island.

If my memory is correct Rainer R told me that these were Sydney Blue Gums. The name which ANBG gives is Eucalyptus saligna, and it would be a new one for our species list.

Maybe another Blue Gum Eucalyptus globulus subsp. bicostata. This is being removed from some areas as it is a fire hazard and an invasive non-local species.

That's why I said 'maybe another Blue Gum'. We will have to wait for Rainer to say whether MIchaelb's recollection is correct. I think there's more than one Sydney Blue Gum too.

I am no expert so I got my info from Wikipedia - - 'sometimes regarded as blue gums … Sydney blue gum (Eucalyptus notabilis)', though the entry for that doesn't mention blue gum.
I think the third photo of this sighting shows juvenile foliage like E. globulus. 'opposite pairs on square stems' but I will wait for the experts.

Maybe I was told Blue Gum. Mike's suggestion seems more accurate. So I've changed my suggestion to Eucalyptus globulus subsp. bicostata.

Eucalyptus globules subsp bicostata is a mainland (largely Victorian species) that grows on the great Dividing Range up to north of Armidale. It is called Sydney Blue Gum by old Nurseyman like Rainer and is one of the most common eucalyptus plantings in the Canberra region.

There are at least three “types” of blue gums that have been planted in our region. According to PlantNet, one, formerly known as E. globulus is now E. pseudoglobulus (http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Eucalyptus~pseudoglobulus), in our region apparently only natural in the South Coast Botanical Region, and E. bicostata (http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Eucalyptus~bicostata) from the South-western Slopes region, where it meets the Southern Tablelands. The link to AVH on both species’ pages in PlantNet takes you to the same page, to a taxon called E. globulus subsp. pseudoglobulus. Another formerly recognised species was E. st johnii. This taxon, from Victoria, is now also apparently regarded as a subspecies of E. globulus. So, what were perhaps three taxa are really only one, E. globulus subsp. pseudoglobulus. Sydney Blue Gum, E. saligna, is quite different. It also occurs in the coastal ranges east of Canberra. The Tasmanian Blue Gum is E. globulus subsp. globulus. Plantnet is out of step with the approved names. The approved names are subspecies of Eucalyptus globulus - Eucalytus globulus subsp. bicostata (Eucalyptis bicostata and Eucalyptus St Johnii) and Eucalyptus globulus subsp. pseudoglobulus (Eucalyptus pseudoglobulus).

By the way, I didn’t mention Sydney Blue Gum in relation to this sighting. I merely said it was one of the blue gums, but recognise Sydney Blue Gum as being quite different!
