Cath it looks like Rosellinia thelena, though it may be too large. What do you think Heino? Cath were you able to get any photos of the spores? Or would you be able to get someone to look at the spores for you? Do you think the wood it was growing on was native or exotic?
Thanks Pam. I went back to this site today and collected a small specimen that I could give to Heino if he is interested. The wood (a large fallen branch) is almost certainly a eucalypyt. It was under a large tree which I think is probably E. melliodora.
Cath, great, well done. If Heino is willing to look at the speciment and the spores that should take us all to a greater understanding of what this great little species is. I look forward to seeing what the spores look like and hearing Heino's opinion. Will you contact Heino?
While I’ll leave this in ‘Rosellinia group’, I suspect this is a Rosellinia proper. Lots of spores, but I didn’t find any asci. However, I then found out something new to me. In a paper about Rosellinia by Liliane Petrini (who has studied the genus in depth), I read this sentence: The asci dissolve very quickly and are rarely seen in mature material.
