Quick shot when suddenly noticed it on the side of the highway in a clearing surrounded by fairly dense forests and woodland. Photo isn't great quality, but black back plumage and white neck and head seems to suggest an ostrich, and posture is of the ratite family.
An interesting find !! See the following for ostriches in Australia: https://bie.ala.org.au/species/urn:lsid:biodiversity.org.au:afd.taxon:44fbaf1a-a7ef-4780-8693-d342ee3aa88e
Thanks Michael! The location of my sighting doesn't seem to overlap with any recorded on the atlas...the closest sighting is one along Monaro HWY, probably the one Sandra mentioned. We were heading towards Bemboka along the Snowy Mountains HWY about 60-70km south of Bredbo. It was feeding in open area 50-100m south to the highway, about 200m northwest to Bombala River.
