Small tree rather than the prostrate form usually seen. Could be different subspecies.

Wikipedia states that subsp. alpinus is prostrate and subsp. communis is erect.

I will have to try on a cloudy day. The sunlight and shadow makes it confusing. It was a single trunk with offshoots and seedlings.

I have some clearer photos of this juniper. How do I add the photos to this listing?

There are no seedlings that I could find, there are some vertical side-branches from a main branch that runs along the ground and is buried by leaf/pine litter, these verticals are actually still attached to the main tree even though they appear at first glance to be separate.
