19 Dec 2017

One of the few recent records of Lace Monitor in the wider Canberra Region

User's notes

date and location are approximate. This was reported by Sheridan Roberts (but sighting is not hers) down Old Gap Road near Yass River. This is the most northern record of Rosenberg's on CNM.

Hi Geoff - we better take another look - this appears tree be a Lace Monitor V. varius. A great record as this species appears to have declined more that rosenberg's have around the Canberra Region. John can check to see i am not seeing things. WillO

Yes this is a typical reason why they are sometimes difficult to tell apart. I think Will might be right, there is no typical paired tail banding and those dark markings under the chin look more like varius. For the time being I am prepared to side with Will in the absence of further argument.

One other feature of V. varius is that there are very broad dark and white bands towards the end of the tail. In rosenberg the double banding continues to the tip of the tail WillO
