It also has the yellow oval between the eye and the beak as seen in more clearly in their breeding plumage - I don't think Hoary-headeds have that at any point. The raised fluffed wing posture and chestnut-brown wash on flanks as also favours A.Grebe. I'm willing to confirm since you agree and with your added point about the line of the cap

And I think that part of Kelly's Swamp may be too shallow for Hoary-headeds. Only recall seeing Aus Grebe on that section
