This looks like it could be a Desmodium. Medicago should have more serrate leaf tips, but this might be just a young plant. Photos of bracts, or flowers as they develop should answer this question.

Yes it is a relatively young plant because it is in a section of the woodland that gets regularly mowed and just appears now and again! We do have Desmodium varians growing in another part of the woodland.

Only two local Desmodiums in Hughes area, D. varens and D, brachypodium and it is not either of these
