First record of the species in our Region. It has been recorded around Sydney and Melbourne. It is a distinctive species and it would be good to know whether it's apparent rarity is environment related - It could be like several orchids whose only local known occurrences are on Black Mountain, or its rarity may be because of under reporting.

Great ant! This will be the first entry of this ant species in our region in the Atlas of Living Australia. It would be great if you could keep an eye out and see if you can get any more records, on Black Mountain or elsewhere. Thanks David.

Thanks Sam. I photographed more of them on another tree nearby, but those photos didn't contain as clear an image of a single specimen as this one. I'll post that record tonight.

I have been checking ants on tree trunks for several years locally when compiling pictures for my book and have never seen it. Ants are notorious tramp species so could have been accidentally introduced locally like the bladder cicada.

I didn't think they were that uncommon on Black Mountain, Roger. I should've logged them sooner. I found a nest under construction on O'Connor Ridge last year.

It is not uncommon but not it's not very obvious either. It's a slow mover and seems to creep around in crevices mostly.
