Harvey. Have you another image? What's that dark shape at the bottom end of the caterpillar? It looks too sharp to be shadow.given we apparently have a very hairy species.

Hi Ian - no, this is the only image I have. I didn't use flash, but I do think the shadow below the head is just that; the shadows of individual hairs are also clearly visible. I reckon about half of the dark blob is head capsule in shadow (due to angle of the light) and the rest is shadow on the tree trunk from the head capsule.

Looking at this sighting again, the general form of the larva suggests to me Lasiocampidae family, eg. Pinara (genus), Perhaps even P. metaphaea

but its difficult to be sure. There is a dearth of images online of the instars of any moth species, let alone this one. A pity the head is in shadow because its shape and markings may well have been definitive.

Hi Ian - I've added an additional close crop of the head area, slightly enhanced to bring out what I can of the head capsule. Not much unfortunately. You can make out the v-shaped sutures but not much more. Head capsule appears largely dark, with bright reddish markings, but otherwise fits reasonably with comments made at https://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/lasi/metaphaea.html
