User's notes

I've seen a cicada emerge before so hung around to watch it pop out. Took maybe 50 minutes

Thanks, if anyone wants the photos from the gaps, let me know. Not sure how it goes for ID purposes though, if our little friend might darken up when it's properly dry, but fingers crossed it's near enough to the end insect.

Hi Judith
We have before and after shots for the Redeye Cicada:
before

after

There is a big change, so I think yours will darken in colour, but one of our experts might recognise it as it is.

I'll remember to stay a little longer if I'm lucky and find another one. Seen a empty case in the past few days around there too so maybe not impossible. :-)

Brown firetail has been suggested.

Do you mean Yoyetta denisoni ?

Checking with the person who made the comment on my flickr account. Hopefully he sees. There's also a Cicadetta sp. nr denisoni that goes by that name.

Thanks Judith, very interesting.
If you don't mind exploring in the same location it would be great to get a photo of an adult !

This is an impressive photo series of what is definitely a firetail cicada (either Yoyetta denisoni or the related Yoyetta sp. nr denisoni). It is not possible to definitely identify between the two options in such a teneral state, hence the broader ID.

Hi Lindsay. Just a slight adjustment - I renamed the sighting because there was a duplicate entry for Yoyetta sp. and removed the duplicate.

Hi Michael. Thanks for tidying this up. Good to know that the system can accommodate ID's to genus or higher if needed.

No worries. Good to see our list of identified species growing

No problems. If I'm lucky enough to see it again, I'll hang around for the finished product!

Yes, David has great example photos of Black Firetail and Brown Firetail, both fully coloured males.
