This polypore was growing on the underside of some well-rotted wood that was lying on the ground in a suburban garden. The white scale bar in the lower left Photo 2 represents one centimetre. In Photo 3 you see a very rudimentary fruit body near the top of the photo. There, the colour is still a pale yellow-brown and what eventually become the deeper brown holes are merely shallow depressions. Mostly, when people notice species of Phellinus, they see those that are protruding growths from the sides of stumps or tree trunks. There are already a few sightings of those on Canberra Nature Map. However, there are also species of Phellinus that produce only flat, pored mats on the lower surfaces of dead or live wood.
