Yes I have seen these clusters, see page 73 of my book. Possibly Dolichoderus scabridus but a picture of an individual would be useful.

I managed to find some ants another photo that were walking towards the ant ball

I think this is Dolichoderus doriae - the close-up photo seems to show spines on the shoulders, pointing forward.
