Knowing that many or most Brachychiton populneus on Mt Majura were originally planted, the leaves on this tree are a bit aberrant for subsp. populneus, the subspecies that grows naturally in the ACT. However, the other subspecies, subsp. trilobus, has three definite lobes. It is planted in the botanic gardens.

The leaf variation on Brachychiton populneus subsp. populneus is most interesting, even on the same tree or same parentage. Some are like poplar hence populneus and others can have long five fingered leaves. I don't think the variations are defined and stable enough to class as varieties like Japanes maple has.
