Urtica incisa is a perennial which has an unbranched inflorescence (flower group) which is longer than the leaf stalk. Urtica urens is an annual (which this appears to be) with a branched inflorescence which is shorter than the leaf stalk.

I should have mentioned that Urtica incisa is a native, and Urtica urens is introduced.

I saw this plant (or its ancestor) 3 years ago in the same place, but in mid December. The flowers were much longer (about the same length as the leaves and narrower than on the current plant. I can't load up the photo as there is no GPS locaation for it. The flowers had also developed a purplish colouring on the sepals? or petals.

The photo I took in 2010 looks exactly like the one shown on plantnet for the Urtica incisa with purple stems and very similar flowers.

In that case it is Urtica incisa. There is no mention of stem colour in Flora of NSW. However, several of the photos of Urtica incisa in the ALA gallery for the species (including ours) have purple stems or stems with purple stripes. URL http://bie.ala.org.au/species/Urtica+incisa#tab_gallery
