Mike, over a dozen species of oaks have commonly been used in street and park plantings in Canberra, the frilly skirt around the acorn of the Turkey Oak is quite distinctive. I find the occasional oak in bush particularly behind schools, the battlegrounds of acorn fights, but without squirrels or jays they aren't going to spread far.
Thanks Michael. I have used street trees to help with identification but found it hard to get a list of Canberra street trees. I have seen some wild oaks but small enough to remove. The street tree that is invading the local reserves is Celtis australis. I wonder when TAMS will start removing them.
