Michael you can eat the both the fruit and young pads of this plant, but removing the prickles sounds difficult and you have to use tongs when picking - supposively makes a very healthy jelly or liquor.

Very interesting, Michael. I suppose some people grow these in their gardens for that purpose....

It is spreading naturally on Scrivener Hill but someone has been planting it too (taking blades from the huge old plants).
