If it is this species, it is atypical. The petals are not notched. There are not enough stamens. The leaves appear not to have toothed edges. On the other hand, the dried out fruiting bodies are typical of Epilobium.

To be honest, I really have no idea what it is. But from what you are saying, the flowers aren't from that species. If it's any help, the fruits were well above the flowers.
