Laura Levens found a similar one in Victoria, see
http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/psyc/psychr.html
We reckoned it might be a Lepidoscia species.

Could you detach the twig and take it into protective custody, and watch it for a year or so, to see what might come out?

This could be a spider egg sac rather than a moth. See Austracantha minax sightings 3390518, 3385253 and 3389316.

Thanks for this information. I'll keep watching the egg sac and try and record what emerges.

Yes Cath, it's an egg sac of a Christmas spider.
