Any idea what they were feeding on?

Neither was feeding at the time. My recollection is that they were both sitting tight on bare drooping branchlets of an essentially dead small tree, I think posssibly a eucalypt, but I didn't pay much attention.

Some of the caterpillars of Lasicampidae are hairy like that, and have a pair of tufts behind the thorax and one on the tail, like

My first thought at the time was Lasiocampidae, but I really don't know much about them.

The red hairy collar looks like Chenuala heliaspis which also has the dorsal chevron on each segment, and has variable colours.

Yes, a good match with D Hobern's example on the ALA and one of the LBH images for this species.
