Author's notes

Closest ID I could find on CNM was Phalaenoides tristifica but the markings on this moth look slightly different.

This is a fine photo and an excellent find. This seems to be a genuine alpine species. The set specimen photographed on the ALA has a label which reads: 'Kosciusko 12 Nov 1957. K.A. Hindwood. 5000 ft.in Snow Grass near Hotel'. A day flying moth in the Noctuidae family (subfamily Agaristinae). The specimens on CSIRO Moth Online indicate this is a female.

Thanks ibaird, appreciate the identification and information. The moth flew in front of me on the Old Boboyan Road and I chased it into the long grass and was fortunate enough that it landed so I could get a photo.

K.A. Hindwood was a Sydney-based gentleman naturalist famous as an ornithologist. He published more articles in the RAOU's journal 'The Emu' than anyone else during his lifetime. He died in 1971. An accomplished citizen scientist!
